Sports Medicine / Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Fellowship

Associates in Medicine & Surgery offers a one-year fellowship training program covering all aspects of reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. Under the guidance of program director Eugene A. Batelli, DPM, FACFAS, this program offers fellows a rich and extensive opportunity to participate in difficult and complicated foot and ankle surgeries, observe leading-edge clinical research, and present at local and national conferences. Fellows complete the fellowship program prepared to achieve board certification.

Post Graduate Fellow: (Completed Fellowship)
2019-2020: Christina Garcia, DPM

Dr. Garcia graduated our Sports Medicine / Reconstructive Foot & Ankle fellowship under Director Dr. Eugene Batelli. She has taken up a special interest in sports medicine and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. Dr. Garcia graduated from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2016, where she was the recipient of the Dr. Steinberg Limb Salvage award and scholarship. Dr. Garcia completed her 3 year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency in 2019 at Memorial Healthcare System, a Level I trauma center in Broward County Florida. She has participated in research pertaining to limb salvage as well as foot and ankle trauma.

2020-2021: Gary Desinord, DPM

Dr. Gary Desinord graduated our Sports Medicine / Reconstructive Foot & Ankle fellowship under the direction of Dr. Eugene Batelli. He graduated (DPM) from Barry University School Of Podiatric Medicine in 2017. Dr. Gary Desinord provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for a wide spectrum of foot and ankle conditions, including common to complex disorders and injuries that affect people of all ages. He is uniquely qualified to detect the early stages of diseases that exhibit warning signs in the lower extremities, such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular disease, and can manage foot conditions that may pose an ongoing threat to a patient’s overall health.

2021-2022: Alyssa Pham, DPM

Dr. Alyssa Pham has graduated our Sports Medicine/Reconstructive Foot and Ankle fellowship under the direction of Dr. Eugene Batelli. She graduated from Barry University School of Pediatric Medicine in 2018 and completed a demanding three year surgical residency at Westside Regional Medical Center.  Dr. Pham also obtained her Masters in Business Administration while getting her medical degree. She is skilled in all aspects of foot and ankle pathologies especially trauma and elective surgeries and knowledgeable regarding the business and management aspects of the medical profession. Dr. Pham is fluent in English and Vietnamese and proficient in Spanish. In her free time, she  enjoys solo backpacking and has been to 48 countries.

Post Graduate Fellow: (Completed Fellowship)
2022-2023: Jonathan Furmanek, DPM

Dr. Furmanek graduated magna cum laude from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2019. Following that, Dr. Furmanek completed his three years of surgical residency at Medstar Washington Hospital center (a level 1 trauma center) and Georgetown University Hospital. He is certified by the American College of Surgeons in Advanced Trauma Life Support as well as is an Associate Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Furthermore, Dr. Furmanek trained under the renowned Dr. Christopher Attinger and Dr. John Steinberg while at Georgetown in advanced plastic surgery and limb salvage techniques. Dr. Furmanek has an interest in minimally invasive surgery, arthroscopic/key-hole surgery, and ankle arthritis solutions. Dr. Furmanek is also distinctively qualified to treat unique pathologies, as he is also certified as a histotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

2023-2024: Robert Sheckler, DPM

Dr. Robert Sheckler originates from the Midwest and graduated from Des Moines University. Before moving to Florida, he completed a 3-year surgical residency at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Currently, Dr. Sheckler is a Fellow with the Associates in Medicine and Surgery Sports Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship, directed by Dr. Eugene A. Batelli. He is also an Associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Robert’s interests include all pathologies of the lower extremities, such as
plantar fasciitis, bunions, hammertoes, sports injuries, foot and ankle arthritis, and complex foot and ankle deformities. During his leisure time, he likes to cook, explore the outdoors, and go hiking.
